Wojciech Zaremba was born on November 30, 1988, in Kluczbork — a small, quiet town in southern Poland. From an early age, it was clear he was wired differently. At 19, he represented Poland at the 48th International Mathematical Olympiad in Vietnam, winning a silver medal — one of the most prestigious achievements in pre-university mathematics, a competition that counts Fields Medalists and Nobel laureates among its alumni.

The Education of a Polymath

Zaremba pursued mathematics and computer science at the University of Warsaw and later at École Polytechnique in Paris, earning dual master's degrees by 2012. When it came time to choose a PhD program, he chose the one where he felt the best chemistry with the faculty — New York University's Courant Institute, supervised by legendary AI researcher Yann LeCun and Rob Fergus.

His professors were immediately impressed. "Wojciech was a dazzling student during his time at NYU," said Professor Fergus. "It was clear that he was going to play a big role in the future of AI."

During his PhD, Zaremba completed internships at NVIDIA, Google Brain, and Facebook AI Research. At Google, he co-authored influential research on adversarial attacks against neural networks — work that later became its own distinct field of study. Despite receiving job offers with what he described as "borderline crazy" salaries from Google and Facebook, he turned them all down.

Recruited to Build the Future

In late 2015, OpenAI was being assembled. Sam Altman and Greg Brockman asked AI pioneer Yoshua Bengio for a list of the smartest people in machine learning. Wojciech Zaremba was on that list.

In December 2015, while still completing his PhD, Zaremba co-founded OpenAI alongside Sam Altman, Elon Musk, Ilya Sutskever, Greg Brockman, John Schulman, and others — backed by $1 billion in commitments. He completed his PhD in just 2.5 years — half the typical duration — with a dissertation titled *"Learning Algorithms from Data."*

The mission was clear: develop artificial general intelligence that benefits all of humanity.

Zaremba's contributions at OpenAI span several landmark achievements:
