A Curious Kid with Big Questions
John Schulman was born in the late 1980s with a deep love for science and stories about the future. As a child, he devoured the works of Isaac Asimov and Vernor Vinge — authors who painted vivid pictures of intelligent machines. A pivotal moment came when he stumbled upon Ray Kurzweil's *The Singularity Is Near* at a garage sale. The book's charts on exponential technological progress lit a fire in him that never went out.
In seventh grade, he became obsessed with *BattleBots*, the television show featuring combat between remote-controlled robots. He and his friends tried to build their own competing robot — though it was never completed, the experience planted a seed of hands-on problem-solving that would define his career.
Caltech, Berkeley, and a Pivot to AI
Schulman was a member of the US Physics Olympiad Team in 2005 and graduated from Caltech in 2010 with a degree in physics. He then headed to UC Berkeley, initially with plans to pursue neuroscience. But a lab rotation with Professor Pieter Abbeel, director of the Berkeley Robot Learning Lab, changed everything.
He was drawn into the emerging world of deep reinforcement learning — a field that trains AI agents through trial, error, and reward signals. Co-Founding OpenAI
In December 2015, shortly before finishing his PhD at UC Berkeley, John Schulman co-founded OpenAI alongside Sam Altman, Elon Musk, Ilya Sutskever, Greg Brockman, Wojciech Zaremba, and others. The mission was bold: advance artificial intelligence in a way that benefits all of humanity.
Schulman joined as a Research Scientist, leading the reinforcement learning team. His most landmark contribution during this era was the invention of Proximal Policy Optimization (PPO) and Trust Region Policy Optimization (TRPO) — algorithms that became the industry gold standard for training AI agents and would later become the backbone of ChatGPT's fine-tuning process.
Building ChatGPT
From 2022 to 2024, Schulman co-led OpenAI's post-training team — the group directly responsible for making language models safe, helpful, and aligned with human intent. This work, known as Reinforcement Learning from Human Feedback (RLHF), is what separates raw AI models from the polished, conversational assistants the world came to know.
When ChatGPT launched in November 2022 and became the fastest-growing consumer application in history, Schulman was surprised by the reception. He noted that the model was perhaps just above the threshold where it made fewer errors and hallucinations than users expected — and that positive word-of-mouth created a powerful feedback loop.
He has been called the "architect of ChatGPT" — a title he wears quietly.
Moving On, Staying Focused
In August 2024, Schulman departed OpenAI and joined Anthropic, citing a desire to deepen his focus on AI alignment and return to hands-on technical research. In February 2025, he moved again — co-founding Thinking Machines Lab, where he serves as Chief Scientist, continuing his singular mission: making powerful AI systems honest, safe, and truly useful.
